Prefer it funny? The parody versions
The Parrot Is the Captain. The captain retired and left the ship to their parrot. The parrot locked you in the hold and keeps squawking the password. It is the wrong one.
Treasure as Startup Equity. The crew were promised treasure. They got shares in the voyage instead, and the hold stays locked until the next funding round.
Arr-chive. You are locked in the pirate records office, deep in the hold. Every chest is a filing cabinet, and every file is marked “arr-gent”.
Choose “Parody” before you start and one of these is picked at random.
